Based in Seoul, South Korea
Hyunwoo Li extracts visual cues from light, shadow, and architectural structures, translating them into the language of painting. By reducing contingent or ephemeral scenes into planes and structural configurations, he investigates the tensions and balances among pictorial elements—boundaries, color fields, and voids. This approach not only recalls traces of the everyday but also recontextualizes the abstract formal principles that painting has inherited since modernism. In his work, the pictorial surface becomes less a site of representation than a space for testing the interplay of surface and structure, articulating the continued expansion of painting’s formal possibilities in the contemporary field.
