Joon Lee

Based in South Korea

LEE Joon (1919–2021) is celebrated as a pioneering figure in Korean abstract painting. Gifted with an extraordinary command of colour, he captured on canvas the harmony, rhythm, and the vibrant joy that animates life itself. His works unfold like festivals of colour, brimming with delight and vitality. For LEE, nature was an inexhaustible treasure that ceaselessly fuelled his creative spirit. He drew inspiration from the natural world, yet transformed it through his own intuition into something uniquely his own. His paintings, constructed through the delicate interplay of lines and planes of colour, reflect the enigmatic order of nature. By uniting the structural clarity of geometric divisions with the free and pure rhythms of colour, he created a realm of colour field abstraction that is at once intellectually rigorous and profoundly lyrical. In LEE's canvases, where countless colour fields overlap, intersect and align, one encounters the artist’s contemplative vision and his unwavering passion for creation. LEE's artistic legacy has been honoured through major retrospective exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), and the Gyeongnam Art Museum. His works are in the collections of leading institutions, including the MMCA, Gyeongnam Art Museum, Daejeon Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art, and Seoul Museum of Art.
