Alexandre Lenoir

Alexandre Lenoir is a French painter born in 1992. Lenoir's work explores the versatility of the painted image from reworked personal photographs. The landscapes or characters gradually become emblematic shapes, a poetic elsewhere as familiar as a dream, a myth, or a memory, where abstraction meets reality. Its variations on evocative forms reveal themselves without allowing us to fully anticipate the final image. The image appears slowly with protocols of mechanical gestures imagined by Alexandre and realized over weeks or even months: tape masking, multiple layers of washes, until the paint impregnates the surface according to the "accidents" the painter deliberately engineers. Through a uniquely performative and intuitive gesture, the aquatic, mineral and vegetative elements of Lenoir’s paintings take on a spiritual dimension. His will coupled with chance allows the painting to become itself a creative entity. Alexandre Lenoir was awarded the Fondation Jean-François Prat et Marie-Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre in 2016 and Pierre Cardin de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris prizes in 2020.
