Changchang Yoo’s paintings, at first glance, appear to align with the genealogy of Superflat through their character-based iconography. Yet the trajectory of his practice diverges significantly from the consumerist or surface-oriented dimensions of that lineage. Yoo’s characters do not operate as mere signs or commodified images; rather, they embody metaphysical anxiety and the pulsations of the inner self. In this sense, they function as manifestations of unconscious affect, eliciting psychological and emotional responses from the viewer. Thus, while appropriating the aesthetic language of the flat surface, Yoo establishes a distinct horizon in which the pictorial plane becomes a medium for summoning the depths of interiority.
