Based in Lives & Works In Brussels
Sophie Varin questions our relationship with reality, and how it is often a matter of negotiating between what we would like to see and what we would prefer to keep hidden. Illustrating seemingly banal everyday scenes, her work depicts ambiguous scenarios where apparent familiarity shows its grimacing face. Passionate about adaptability and imitation techniques, Sophie Varin likes to think about her characters' ability to succeed - or fail - in understanding the context in which they find themselves. Her paintings and sculptures place great importance on the gaze of the observer, the witness, the audience - particularly the way in which curiosity, desire and fantasy have the capacity to alter what we look at. This distorted gaze, too eager to remain rational, projects so many blurred scenarios onto reality.
