A few apples, a folded cloth, a table. Cézanne painted this still life dozens of times, each version slightly out of true. He gave up reproducing a scene as seen from one position. The two ends of the table do not meet at the same height; the plate is tipped as if viewed from above. Overlaying several viewpoints made the objects waver and, at the same time, hold more firmly. He painted Mont Sainte-Victoire for over thirty years, the mountain approaching a set of coloured planes each time. Cubism began here. He died in 1906 after being caught in rain while painting outdoors.
