Jihyun Im

Based in Seoul, South Korea

Jihyun Im observes the vitality and forms found in natural objects and plants, expanding and transforming them into painterly language. Her paintings, where abstract shapes and vivid colors intersect, are generated through intuitive gestures such as rubbing and pressing the canvas surface, thereby revealing the process of painting itself. This practice deconstructs and reconstitutes surfaces, evoking the instability of visual perception and emphasizing painting not as a fixed image but as a process of emergence and disappearance. Through repetition and layering, forms are left indeterminate and blurred, inviting perceptual experiences that shift constantly with the viewer’s gaze. Ultimately, her canvases embody the tension between subject and observer, expanding painting into a variable and open practice of thought.
