After graduating from the sculpture department of Hongik University and its graduate school, Chung Hyun flew to France to pursue further studies, where he graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1990. On the occasion of studying in France, he made attempts to work on foregrounding the kinesthetic sense and abstraction of the human body, breaking away from sculpting in a way of embodying realistic objects. His approach of maximizing the physical properties of the medium with minimal intervention implies his intrinsic formative characteristic, and at the same time, the fundamental time of the material which it has lived through and put up with as an inherent being, Chung captures the texture of time and experience condensed in the material, paying attention to the essence of the material that turns into insignificant or obsolete, no more in use. This implicitly unveils Chung's world of art, where non-sculptural matier transforms into a sculpture eventually.
