Sejin Kwon

Based in South Korea

Kwon Sejin explores traces of time and the transformation of images by recording everyday landscapes through photography and reconfiguring them into paintings. He transfers photographs he has taken himself into painting, building layers of time on the surface through repeated brushstrokes and overlapping layers. In this process, yesterday’s landscape is not treated as a simple record of the past but is transformed into an image that returns to the landscape of the day before yesterday. For the artist, painting is less an act of reproducing a specific moment than a way of revealing the shifting states of images as they exist within time. The landscapes in his work retain a sense of specific place while expanding into painterly structures in which the flow of time is accumulated. Moving between photography and painting, Kwon Sejin unsettles the fixity of images and invites quiet reflection on the relationship between time and perception.
