Andy Warhol

He hung thirty-two soup cans in a row. Each is a different flavour, and that is the whole of it. Warhol drew no line between what art should handle and what a shop sells. Printing the same image over and over in silkscreen, he blurred the idea of an original. Marilyn and Mao, the electric chair and the car crash were all put through the same process. The more the feeling is removed and the image repeated, the stranger it gets. From the studio he called the Factory he produced films, a magazine and a band. He survived being shot in 1968, after which the work leaned further commercial. He died of complications from gallbladder surgery in 1987.
