Pablo Picasso

Based in Málaga, Spain

In 1907 he painted five women and broke their faces. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon cuts the body seen from one position into pieces and reassembles it from several angles at once. Cubism starts here. Before it came the Blue and Rose periods; afterwards he moved through classicism and Surrealism. He never stayed inside one manner. Beyond painting he worked in sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and stage design, leaving some fifty thousand works. When Guernica was bombed during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 he finished an enormous mural within a month. Painted in black and white alone, it became the reference point for anti-war painting in the twentieth century. He died in 1973 at ninety-one.
