Jackson Pollock

He spread the canvas on the floor and walked over it, letting the paint fall. The brush never touched the cloth. Instead of standing in front of the painting, Pollock stepped into it. The all-over composition — no centre, no margin, the whole surface filled evenly — came out of this. It is the point at which painting shifted from what it depicts to how it was made. A 1949 magazine spread asking whether he was the greatest living painter in the United States made him a celebrity, and he could not carry it. He died in a drink-driving crash in 1956, aged forty-four.
