Eunkyung Lee

The figures in Eun-Kyung Lee’s works all share a similar expressionless, subtly uncomfortable, and unnatural appearance. Bloodshot eyes, marks around the eyes and blemishes, and tightly pressed lips evoke the fatigue of superficial social interactions that anyone in contemporary society can relate to. In the artist’s self-portraits, the ‘self’ reflects something familiar in all of us. Throughout our daily lives, we encounter countless mirrors. Through these reflections, we can observe both ourselves and others simultaneously. This is because mirrors capture every movement of consciousness while existing on the boundary between reality and illusion. Through the act of looking into a mirror, the artist examines her inner self and, in turn, invites us to confront our own reflections before the mirror of her self-portraits.
