The distinct features that can be observed immediately when we are in front of the works of Jiyeon SONG, an artist in residence of Sun Gallery, are the impression of the city encountered in everyday life and the thick, rough, and unrefined texture. Her work renders the city where she was born and grew up as a medium to show the organic relationship between her life and the environment. The accumulation of pigment through numerous brush strokes that record repeated drawing and erasing, which is seen in her canvas, can also be the accumulation of the time that contains the process and journey to find her own identity. The repetitive work of drawing and erasing creates a unique texture in which the physical properties of pigment stand out, but it is also a method of self-reflection, a process of asking the meaning of existence, and an act of ruminating on the meaning of life. Numerous brush marks left on the canvas are piled up in layers to create a unique style with their subtle combinations of colors. This is because they are not simple combinations, but colors containing the multifaceted emotions of the artist.
