Nam June Paik

Based in South Korea

He laid televisions on their sides, stacked them, built a cello out of them. Nam June Paik turned the screen that broadcasting pushed at people into sculptural material. He began in music and performance with Fluxus in Germany, moving from stages where pianos were destroyed to the cathode-ray tube. The More the Better, installed at MMCA in 1988, is a tower of 1,003 of them. He was also the first artist to work with satellite broadcast. Good Morning, Mr. Orwell linked New York and Paris live in 1984, turning a technology prophesied as surveillance back into a festival. He died in Miami in 2006.
